I'm never taking a handheld out with me again unless it's a plane ride. It's a bother when I already have other stuff to deal with. I'd much rather take my Kindle if I'm going to be waiting.
As far as seeing them in the wild, I've only seen the 3DS with kids. I live in the southeastern United States where the majority of people travel by car. In waiting areas, I only ever see teenagers and adults with their noses buried in their phones--often the whole room.
