Call of Duty: WW2 Features Playable Female Characters, Diverse Cast

Call of Duty: WW2 will feature playable female characters, developer Sledgehammer Games confirms. Sledgehammer also reveals that the upcoming World War 2 shooter will star a “diverse cast” of characters.

Sledgehammer Games’ co-founder Michael Condrey has previously voiced support for diversity in games, saying that more inclusive developer is better for everybody.

Call of Duty : WW2 Female Characters Confirmed

Announced today by Sledgehammer Games and publisher Activision, the story of Call of Duty: WW2 will be told from the perspective of Ronald “Red” Daniels who is a member of the United States Army, 1st Infantry Division. But although Daniels is undoubtedly the star of the show, players will be able to assume the role of at least one playable female character as well.

A French Resistance fighter named Rousseau will be playable during the game’s campaign – and is the only other playable story character confirmed so far. Moreover, Call of Duty: WW2 will also feature playable female characters in its multiplayer and co-op game modes which is perhaps an improvement on World War 1 shooter Battlefield 1 which didn’t feature playable female characters in multiplayer, despite having a playable female character in its story campaign.

During the Call of Duty: WW2 reveal event, Sledgehammer Games further stated that its game would feature playable characters of different races too. An African-American soldier has been shown in some art for the game though Sledgehammer hasn’t offered any details about the character (or any other non-white leads) or shown him action.

While details are admittedly quite brief right now, female Call of Duty fans, fans of colour, or even just history buffs will be glad to see that women and people of colour are featured in every part of the game. As Sledgehammer itself noted during the event, World War 2 was not just an American conflict and featured a diverse set of people, including men, women and people of all different ethnicities, and it’s important to represent that.

At this point it’s difficult to gauge exactly how much Call of Duty: WW2 will look at those stories. However, more details about the game (including both its story and multiplayer modes) are expected at E3 2017 in June.

Call of Duty: WW2 will be released on Windows PC, PS4 and Xbox One on November 3.
