Agreed. It's unlikely that the Switch will outsell BOTH at the same time, hardware-wise. But the benefits of combining ecosystems will be tested in terms of total software sales vs. the costs of developing on both.
It's a gamble for Nintendo, but they need to greatly reduce 3DS development and advertising for holiday 2017 and let it fade into the sunset for 2018. They won't ever know if a hybrid is the answer until it's supporting their full software line-up.
