If I remember correctly, the natural social abilities of humans are limited to something between 200 and 300 people.
People are kind of hard to study properly, but there has been some fairly extensive research done on the concept with chimpanzees.
If a group grows above ~80, it will, without fault, split up into smaller groups that fight for dominance, and eventualy all but one are killed off or have fled.
