Mhm the 3ds did have huge 3rd party support tho..... and even still the system has only managed to sell a little over a third of whatrheDsdid |
I think that is a result of a crowded consumer gadgets space. consoles in the 7th generation and earlier did not have to compete with smartphones, tablets, wearables, media streamers etc. Honestly looking at last gen, all three home consoles did quite well, and handhelds performed also exceptionally well. Fast forward now and we really only have PS4 being a strong performer (and even so it is still lagging behind Wii sales, when looking at the sales gap data; though there is no doubt in my mind PS4 will end up seeling more because it will have much longer legs than Wii, which just died after 2011; wish I had some data comparing it to PS2). XOne is about to be overtaken by 360 looking at the sales gap data (the One is only slightly ahead now), and the Vita is far behind PSP. The 3DS has not done nearly as well as DS, but then again considering everything else I mentioned it has not really done poorly either. I suspect the Switch will eventually outsell 3DS line's life times sales (although not by much), largely because it is a much more viable long-term platform than the 3DS was (I also believe Nintendo will create a cheaper more portable version of the Switch down the line, which ought to help it as well).
