Having beaten the game, I can say for certain that the only times the game is not generous with its saving are the second-to-last and last dungeon -- especially the second-to-last dungeon.
As a side note, the last dungeon is fantastic and isn't overly long like the second-to-last dungeon. I love its puzzles and visual aesthetic.
