I realize they won't disappear entirely, but I'm hopeful Naughty Dog will preserve a more palatable ratio of moments under player control and moments when control is wrested away from the player. |
This.
I'm glad that linear and story heavy games is still a thing in a time where many AAA games are sold as services filled with MMO-like structures and "unprecedented" sized open worlds. But I'd love it if Naughty Dog tried to tell more of their story through gameplay, environments, characters, video logs, notes, etc. like former Valve games like Half-Life and Portal. As you say, they take away player control too often.
Naughty Dog has had some of this storytelling through the world in The Last of Us, for instance with the Ish notes. And it worked so well. I still clearly remember the story of Ish and his fellow survivors like Kyle who "saved" a group of children by shooting them and then comitted suicide.
