Did you not follow the hype and success of the XBox One S? It was already considered to be a 4K console with direct upscaling from 900p to 4K for supposed great results. Here it was advertised with the 4K label at BestBuy with lots of great bundles, while the pro didn't get labeled as 4K at all, zero bundles.

XBox One S made a big impact when it launched, outselling the ps4 pro, slim and psvr boost combined. It already fixed MS' hardware image. People were already double dipping in droves. It's a very well designed slim model for a good price and if MS had put great software behind it it could have started a ps3 type comeback. Yet now MS is saying that you need really true 4K instead of games...

That is because it was all clever marketing, and upscaled 900p didnt look any  better than upscaled 1080p to 4k on PS4, in fact It even looked worse as It needed to scale 5.7x instead of 4x

Of course native will look much better than that, yet a lot of Xbox fanboys were screaming they are playing in 4K on the S and that its equal and cheaper than PS4 Pro Lol

Yet it worked! Clever marketing (and a good price) easily outsold the ps4 pro and gave an actual boost to XBox One sales, where as the native and checkerboard 4K of the ps4 pro didn't do much for sales. MS could have easily gone with the 'it's good enough' narrative while focussing on the real benefits, HDR rendering. That could have been their "this is how you share games" moment.

Anyway XBox didn't have a hardware issue, it had an image issue which was mostly solved with the XBox One S. The ps3 made a comeback by releasing an affordable slim model backed by a great lineup. XBox One S with great games could have done the same. Scorpio is nice for enthusiasts but won't make a splash, just like ps4 pro. XBox One S did briefly turn the tables on ps4 in NA, yet without the games it's back to normal this year.

The PS3 didn't make a 'comeback' it beat 360 virtually every single year it was out.

It was perceived as a comeback. As I said above, it's the image that counts. The ps3 slim and subsequent great lineup fixed the image problem the ps3 had.
