High resolution isn't just about eye candy as you have already hinted in this post. Have you tried to play PC games on a SDTV? What about viewing this web page on a SDTV? Noticed the difference? A lot of today's PC games will not run lower than 1024x768 as higher resolution also allows a bigger and better interface. Higher resolution allows you to see more of this thread on the screen at once. ( to be fair NG2 resolution still has over twice as many pixels than a SDTV (4:3) so it will still look better on a HDTV than a SDTV) As you have hinted (fit more on the screen) someone else, in a different thread, noticed that when playing CoD4 on a SDTV he had to use a scope to sniper when those with HDTV could sniper him with any gun. Seldom if ever does higher resolution adds more eye candy to a PC game but only reveals the eye candy that's already there. Other times it gives a greater viewing area as Civ4 for example and a few games adds more information (interface). All of these enhances gameplay.

You have just more or less said what i have already said but in a diff way. If you read what i have put you will clearly see that i have stated LOW resolution can make games un-playable but the resolution of nearly all games today is more than enough to be able to play the game without any problems. So in thatscase high resolution is just for eye candy. yes you do with a point with games like civilization.
