The media (the serious media, not those alternative-facts idiots) is playing an important role in informing people, both those in the area and their relatives. I think people would freak out much more if media didn't report about the events, and it would also lead to an increase in speculations and rumours.

In this case the police seems to have done a good job in getting control of the situation, and that's something you want those responsible as well as their supporters to see.
