| LudicrousSpeed said: The Switch and Xbone/PS4 are pretty much going after two different markets. The gamers who buy Xbone/PS4 consoles wouldn't buy a Switch instead of one of those, they'd buy the Switch to compliment the other, because as the article says, the libraries don't differ that much for most peoples tastes. Nintendo platforms meanwhile provide a lot of variety but without major 3rd party support. It's the same as PC and consoles, yet for some reason people understand fine that Nintendo platforms exist for a different market yet can't wrap their heads around the idea that PC gaming and console gaming are two different markets as well, thus we get "lol but xbox has no exclusives!!". That said, the Scorpio is a gaming console, the Switch is a gaming console, and there are only three in the market. So of course they are all "worried" about one another. But not at the degree this random blogger who posted their opinion on Forbes believes, imho. |
I do generally agree with your point. However, I am not certain about PC gaming and home console gaming being aimed at different audiences (particularly when we look at XOne in relation to PC). I have an XOne, Switch, and a gaming PC. The Switch and the gaming PC compliment each other because they provide different gaming experiences because one is more verstile and portable with exclusive experiences designed around this aspect; the other is designed to be a stationary system that provides higher graphical fidelity. The thing is that PS4 and XOne also aim to be stationary systems that offer higher graphical fidelity, and so it does not appear it is going after a different market. Moreover, I can see PS4 gamers buying a PC and vice versa because of exclusives and not necessarly because the two systems are going after a different market (similar as to how certain people have both Macs and Windows-based PCs with similar configuations); but I cannot say the same for Xbox, largely because not only does the console (like PS4) share a similar use philosophy with the gaming PC (both are stationary systems designed to provide high fidelity graphical experiences), but it largely (with the exception of Halo 5 and Sunset Overdrive) shares a similar library of exclusives with the PC (and the PC itself has exclusives not on XOne; not to mention the productivity use case). For me, Microsoft introduction of Xbox Play Anywhere has resulted in my XOne being replaced by the PC, and if I want a more premium experience like the one offered by Scoprio, all I essentially need to do is upgrade my graphics card (which will cost less than Scorpio if I get a card equivialnt in function to what Scorpio provides; or I can get a card for the same price as Scorpio which will be much more powerful than what is in the Scorpio).
