I think we're hitting a point of diminishing returns. Rather than adding new elements, a lot of the games we're getting are basically the same games we've been playing for ten years now, just sharper. The only games that can really stand out in the graphical crowd, games such as Uncharted 4, Horizon, for Honor, etc., are more about the resources they use than the console that is driving them (i.e. they're expensive to make). Even a tech head like me isn't particularly attuned to 4k. SD to HD was a huge jump, on anything but a movie screen, I generally have to squint to make out the differences between full HD and ultra HD, or else sit very close to the TV itself. I think it's telling that some of the best games this year have come from Japan, which tends to favor gameplay over graphics.
