I don't think religion should be taught at school, simply because if it is, then you should teach kids about atheism and about all the major religions, and that is something that will not be done in a school environment.
Teaching kids basic history will allow them to grasp some aspects of religion, but if you want have specific religion courses then having a proper balance we will be very difficult.
