| Kyuu said: I hope it isn't as overrated as it sounds even though I stopped caring for Metacritic all that much. I've never played Persona 4 but I did watch the anime, gameplay videos, and played and finished Persona 3 Portable on my PSP. I could never fathom how P4 was so well received and is considered the GOAT by a great many gamers coz it just seemed like P3 with inferior story/characters and somewhat adjusted systems. And while Persona 3 was great, I still considered it slightly overrated. Each to their own but I'm honestly surprised that the incredibly conservative battle system is often disregarded, and at times praised, whenever it concerned this series just because it does other things well. Yet the same reviewers tend to be overly harsh when other games don't do enough to innovate. World of Final Fantasy for instance is clearly an underrated game if the demo is anything to go by. Pretty sure I'm beginning to sound like a Persona hater but I swear I'm not! P5 was one of my most anticipated games for a long time but I feel reviewers are wanking it compared to how other JRPG's are typically treated. Hopefully I'll love it to death and eat those words. |
Video-game journalism is a business and reviews are an important cog in that machine. That's just the simple truth. Positive reviews aren't more trustworthy than negative reviews. In fact, I get a lot more cynical when I see 10s all over the place.
That being said, there was a time when you could tell that some people didn't like niche games being ranked up at the top with the big names and big brands. In that regard, even if a game like Persona has some inflated scores, I'm fine with that because all it does it put it on par with the big budget stuff.
Of course, I don't give much weight to scores or hype to begin with and I'm certainly not worried about where it ranks on some stranger's list of games. The game sounds like fun and that's good enough for me. Hype-burn is a self-inflicted wound.
