Yeah, on second thought I would also recommend starting with P3, as the former games were pretty different in that regard. Something that made P3 so popular was the inclusion of Social Links.

But I'd say start with Persona 3: FES.
Not Persona 3 or Persona 3 Portable.

I think FES is the one I have. But I can't bring myself to start at 3, 4, or 5. I feel compelled to start at the beginning, even if the games are unrelated.
