I would guess that it was a limited manufacturing run to start with and when that ran out ... well, Nintendo has never been bothered if consumers are left wanting. Rather than potentially leave a bunch of units unsold because it's a seasonal item, or deal with increased manufacturing costs from smaller production runs, they just shrugged and left people to catch it next time. Nintendo has always put the bottom line first.
