That's rather a stretch for gen 7... the PS3 only overtook the xbox360 when their relevance had decently faded, and the Wii outsold both.
Also, you'd have to describe what you consider to be the "hardcore" crowd... for a while there the only people Nintendo had left could easily be called "hardcore", in that they were willing to spend extra for what was generally not even their primary console to play some exclusives.
