"It’s simply a quantity vs quality tradeoff"
What a cop out, rather have both.
Unfortunately, Bioware fails on both.

You took that out of context. He said that because of the magnitude of rpg's, unlike a game like Uncharted, you have to make that tradeoff because you don't have time to put the same amount of focus into every scene, because there's just that many more of them.

Basically, you can't have both in games like this if there's too much work to do.

That's not where he is saying that Bioware messed up. But rather that they tried to not rely on the algorithm, and instead do everything by hand. They attempted to increase the overall quality, and it backfired.

Yes thats how I understand it too.

They gave up on trying to do everything by hand, because it was too much work.... only they realised that too late, and had to scramble to impliment a algorthme based alternative.

They should have had more time & money, and done it all by hand as they intended.
