The left tend to trend towards equality and equity for all regardless of Gender, Sexuality or Race, they are progressive. Aka. "Social Justice Warriors".
Conservatives are right-wing, who have historically attacked those who are different from themselves. (Nazi Germany against the Jews and Homosexuals, KKK, White Supremicsts, Trump against Muslims and Mexicans. etc'.)
They use all sorts of rhetoric to hide that fact.

As someone who is Gay, I do actually agree with you to an extent, that Characters should not just be "made" gay or throw sexuality in your face.
It should be built into the characterization from the very beginning and have a good backstory to build from that.
I didn't agree with the Gay reference in the last Star Trek film for a character I always thought was straight, I didn't appreciate how Kaden's perceived sexuality changed in Ass Effect 3 either.
But that's not the fault of the Social Justice Warriors, that is the fault of poor writing. Most LGBTQI people don't want characters to be Gay for the sake of it. We wan't gay Characters, sure. But done properly, done tastefully.
