It's not unfair because it would have been bad either way.  That's my point.  The content is what makes a show good, not being live or recorded.  

Though, personally, I do like hearing the crowd make noise for a surprise or something really impressive.  It enhances my excitement.  

I appreciate that, but for every instance of genuine applause there are three or four moments where the speaker intentionally pauses for applause to be greeted with silence.
