I include games that fit my original definition, original studios, no funding, no buying, straight up development. So no R&C, BloodBorne, Resistance, Order 1886, Uncharted, inFamous, etc. Stingy definition, but at least, its a fair criteria that has been outlined with what I'm arguing, and justifies my other point of MS being harped on for the lack of original content. We are in the midst of Sony's strongest years of first party production for PS4. It's to be determined at this point but its looking like a bright future. Knack is under 2 Million sold according to VGC, so I'm unsure what you consider a commercial success. Personally I say at least 2 Million, like Forza, could be considered a commercial hit. TLG is at 1 Million atm, it will leg itself to 2 Million lifetime, yearly MLB pulls in 1 Million, GT Sport is a candidate for 10 Million, GoW is primed for 5 - 10 Million, Knack 2 can sell 2+ Million, and whatever projects we get from Sony Japan (one of which is a rumored JRPG according to trusted, NeoGAF user Verendus, who has a strong track record with reveals) + London Studios (8 Days has never been formally cancelled, similar to TLG, and IIRC this studio employs a large amount of people). I could be reaching for the last two though. Older, original, Sony studios were shut down, unfortunately, so you're right in the list being somehwat shortened. Though a historical perspective of original studios would widen this list up quite a bit. |
So it's essentially Gran Turismo, God of War, and maybe TLG will make it eventually. I don't consider Knack a commercial success simply because it was mass bundled. Who knows what happens with Knack 2, but the first was not a critical success and was heavily bundled, inflating its sales number.
Potentially three franchises to Microsofts one. Not exactly a good showing for either company. Nintendo trounces them both. Imho Sony is a far cry from the PS1/PS2 days. They both depend heavily on outsourced exclusives and quality games from studios they have purchased. Personally I don't care if MS wants to spend some of their massive war chest on new studios, but it seems like the industry is heading away from that.
