Maybe it's bacause I'm from the mainland? But even traveling in and out of the UK I only ever needed my ID card. UK does actually check them on entrance though, most other european coutries only check on departure and let you enter unchecked. I know a ton of people that don't even have a passport (It's a separate application process from the ID card) and still travel all over europe.
