i7 6700 is $269 at Microcenter (+$30 off a mobo), gaming performance is easily a R7 1700 beater ($330)
At $269, that's a great CPU value given its stock performance. Compound to it that with a Z170 board you can get a ~4.4Ghz(easily without pushing voltage) manual overclock even though its a non-K processor. I would pay the extra $10 for the 6700k ($279) , but a 6700 is not a bad move whatsoever.
