Not sure it matter's, they knew that the fan base make up the core of early adopters so having Zelda front and centre with a selection of smaller games was enough.
Talking about holding off to the next holidays ,I don't think it would make much difference, the people buying it then would be the same people buying it today, you might pick up a few more holiday gift sales but at the cost of 8 months worth of sales, and depending on when they started manufacturing and sales forecast's they might be supply constrained.
More games doesn't necessarily mean even distribution, all it would most likely do is add to the feast or famine publishing cycle we see now, where the holidays and march/ april seem to be hot spots , rather than even out the games through the year.
