How in the world would that have made them "shoot themselves in the foot"? Doesn't MS have almost 100 billion in the bank? The 2.5 billion from Minecraft is not substantial to them. Furthermore that money would have just sat in the bank collecting interest. If MS makes more money off Minecraft than they would off interest, then it's a win for them.
Also, LOL @ it being past its prime. There are merchandise lines, sequels, and other games like Story Mode that will have the franchise live on.
