New Onimusha game possibly teased by Resident Evil 7 producer

Looks like Capcom could be preparing to release a new Onimusha game, according to this interview with the Resident Evil producer.

Is Capcom secretly making a new Onimusha game?

Capcom may consider developing a new Onimusha game following the series decade-long hiatus, Resident Evil 7 producer Masachika Kawata has told the Daily Star.

Kawata-san acknowledged the series’ popularity and hinted that it may see a resurrection, though stopped short at confirming if something was actively happening as far as a new entry in the Japanese hack-’n-slash franchise is concerned.

"Certainly, the series was a big hit back in the day and I do think there is something in that, which is worth considering," said Kawata. "Whether or not anything is happening, I cannot say."

Capcom’s Yoshinori Ono said last year suggested the publisher was looking at ways to bring back its classic IP, and strongly hinted that Onimusha could indeed make a comeback.

"Capcom as a company know we have many brands, IP’s and series that are beloved by players around the world and we always have fans asking us, when is this or that game coming back," said Ono-san. "I've spoken internally with people who made Onimusha with me originally and talked about maybe how interesting it would be to revisit that series."

Onimusha Warlords was released on the PS2 back in 2001 and spawned the sequels Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny, Onimusha 3: Demon Siege, and Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, plus numerous spin-off titles. Capcom announced that the franchise had sold over 7.9 million copies worldwide as of December 31, 2012.

Chatter regarding an Onimusha reboot has been doing the rounds for a few years now, with Ninja Theory originally rumored to be behind the series overhaul, having revamped Devil May Cry back in 2013.
