MS tried with Japanese games this generation even though it didn't pan out (whether it's because of MS or not is to be debated).
- Crimson Dragon; It was a small title, and it was kind of mediocre but it was a spiritual successor to a non-shit japanese game series (Panzer Dragoon). The game is nothing to write home about but I always get some sort of craving to go back and play it... don't know why :P
- D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die; From the "mastermind" behind Deadly Premonition and it was actually very enjoyable. It was basically a Telltale clone but with an engine that wasn't shit and very "japanese" story (kinda out there). It flopped because it was centered around Kinect 2.0 and yeah, that sucks. However, it wasn't a bad game, by Kinect standards, it was great.
- Phantom Dust; They are still going to release a Phantom Dust port to the Xbox One but they did cancel the Remake (the one they "showed" in 2014). It has my interest but I am disappointed that they are just porting the OGXbox version to the Xbox One instead of continuing the remake.
- Recore; From the mind "behind" Mega Man and the critically acclaimed Mighty no.9 :D... Well the game is not bad by any means, I'm playing it now and I'm having fun as hell even though it is rather simple. It is developed by an american studio (Armature) and Comcept so I don't know how valid it is to put it here? I just did it anyway :P
- Scalebound; Yeah, that went well.. I don't think it's Microsoft's fault that it all went to shit. Kamiya would not be merciful if he thought it was MS' fault. He has been vocal about that before. This time, he just apologized, which is out of character from what I've heard.
So I mean, It's not like MS just didn't try, they tried (maybe their tries were half-assed depending on where you look at it). I'm no expert on Japanese games (I play predominately on Xbox so duh ;)) but I really enjoyed D4, Crimson Dragon (not great but worth the 20$) and Recore (same here, not great but worth 40$) and I was really looking forward to Phantom Dust and Scalebound.
You can say that "Ofcourse they would fail, they were japanese games on Xbox" and I wouldn't blame you, you are probably right but to shut out the Xbox audience from japanese games is a bad idea. Of course FFXV will sell 5 times more on PS4 if all other FF-like experiences are on the PS4. I don't think porting is a hard process, especially now when PS4 and Xbox One are so similar in architecture, timey maybe. The more Japanese games there are, the more likely audiences will build in the Xbox community. I know people who bought PS4 because of japanese games but they are longing for Gears and Halo, they just can't afford both. I know Xbox gamers who want more "Tales of" games to come to Xbox because they enjoyed Vesperia so much. I know Xbox gamers who will skip out on Kingdom Hearts 3 on Xbox because they have no way of playing the ones that came before it.
This became rambling quite quickly I realize :P
The point of the things I'm trying to say, you can't expect any Japanese game to succeed on Xbox unless there are enough of those games on the platform to support that sort of audience. It has become an evil circle. Unless this changes, there is no way the japanese exclusives will come to Xbox. I support more Japanese games on Xbox, I just don't necessarily enjoy those sort of experiences... except the ones I listed, I enjoyed those. I'll stop now.
