Thats a main point if you want to talk about best Zelda game or best game owereal, there is no much sense to compare game from 98" and game from 2017" because every game age and of course buy time newer games will have better graphics, or better story, or better controls, or better mechanics...so thats pointels, it has much more sense to compare in way is it for instance Zelda BotW better game in 2017. than OoT was in 98"!? But you can't really gave most accurate answer if actually you didn't played OoT back then around 98". |
I was there day one in 1998, and yes the game's controls were shit to me. I never liked them in that game. The lack of camera controls certainly didn't help. And although I appreciated a lot of the things it did at the time, I never once thought it was the best game of all time.
The thread asks if BOTW will dethrone OoT. And to me, there are many games that came out that were better, including both Wind Waker and Twilight Princess.
Review standards from 1998 and current review standards are quite different, for various reasons. We will probably never see another game reach a meta of 99. But you should also keep in mind that the score is based on only 22 reviews. Had there been more reviewers like there are now, with a lot of variations in tastes and bias, you can be sure Ocarina of Time's meta score would have been different. I will go further and say that Ocarina of Time came out during an era where people were much more easily impressionable.
