The internet couldn't tell a fork from a spoon. The PS2 was $299.99 and we all know how that ended. Anything under $299.99 is a great deal but $299.99 is still the sweet spot. Not too expensive for the mass market but not too cheap so as to lose money.

$300 woud be a good price for a console that was better than PS4 and Xbox One, but not so much a console that's barely better than an Xbox 360.

For starters, both of those consoles were $399.99 and $499.99 when they launched. If a console came out that had the same spec leap that they had, you'd see the price range well above $299.99. Expecting otherwise is foolish. Secondly, "better" is reletive. You obviously think better is having better specs. Other's may say the Switch is superior because of the way it works. In that sense, it's far better and more capable.

The ps2 also came with a DVD player. I believe that was a pretty big thing back then.

$300,  no games bundled in, and less powerful than the competition. On top of which the competition offers 4k, netflix,  is $50 cheaper, offers multiple deals, and has a HUGE backlog. And that is without bringing up the switches lacking third party support in the form of RDR2, Mass effect etc.

$300 is fine in a bubble. We aren't in a bubble. There is real and stiff competition out there that are doing it better and cheaper.

So yeah I expect a $250, a game bundle, or both by the time the holidays hit.

The PS2 had no games bundled, it was less powerful than Xbox and Gamecube. The competition offered higher resolution, ended up being $50 dollars cheaper, and had multiple deals. In the end, it didn't fucking matter because people just liked it more and felt the value was there.

So far, people are saying the same about Switch. It's preorders have already outperformed PS4's when it launched. We'll have to wait and see how it sustains demand, but there's nothing indicating that it's going to be anything but a success at $299.99
