It does take a lot from other big Battle Mangas, like the Big 3 and even in one arc, it resembles Magi too. However, it does stand on it's own really well and does have some nice twists in it (and the last chapter was hype af). Personally, I like Aster as an MC, resembles a certain someone with how he wants to be the Sorcerer Emperor...but that's not too big of an issue for me. What I am worried about is whether it can stay consistent, but so far it's doing well and the main enemy hasn't been defeated, so hopefully it doesn't end up like Bleach.... |
I'm liking it more as I go along, though less for the hero than for all the other characters. I don't hate the protagonist, he's much better than some, but I do hate the need for the hero to constantly shout out stuff that's supposed to sound cool. It's the biggest negative of the manga for me.
I guess that's as much of a problem I have with the genre in general, though. Some do it very well, like One Piece, where you know Luffy damn well means what he says when he gets serious, and everything is set up to give weight to his outbursts. Others just seem like they're going for the same effect but without the substance that makes it feel meaningful.
