I don't think pewdiepie deserved anything. His recent vlogs have been actually entertaining. I never really liked his videos that much previously but i could always sense some sincerity everytime he was giving his opinion on something. I was not a fan of the obvious jokes and the overreactions, but everytime he brought it down to a more personal level it would always seem sincere in my eyes.
Of all the people who could be the most successful youtuber i don't think he is the worst choice. He is super harmless.
