Nintendo fan base is small compared to the PlayStation and Xbox fan bases, always has been since the ps1 days, wii did not sell 100m+ to Nintendo fans it sold them to people on the hypetrain for motion controls.
Handheld market is shrinking rapidly due to the market penetration of smartphones and the switch is a desperate attempt to combine home, portable and Mobile market potential customer base into one tree, before the fruits rot and fall to the ground.
If Nintendo still do their own hardware in 10 years I will genuinely be surprised.
That's my take on this, and I say it as someone that has owned every Nintendo console and handheld since the nes.
