In both cases, it's either my fault or a crime. You could use the same logic to a car: someone can crash on you or it may be stolen. It also works to a house, a watch, anything. You won't damage your entire collection unless your house catches fire or you face a flood. It's also not that common to have someone break into your house and steal your games.
Valve shutting down the servers would remove you hability to play ALL your games at once. It's a business decision screwing you over stuff you paid. It's not a physical barrier. It's like Volks went out of business and they disabled all Golfs in the world.
