That's the thing. I agree that a lot of places in Brazil are dangerous, but not all of them. Not even close. If you say that, you must live in a somewhat dangerous area. Plus, most countries have dangerous cities/neighbourhoods/etc. It's not an excuse... it must be terrible to lose a friend that way indeed, but all I'm saying it that given the place he lived it's not really surprising and that it doesn't mean that ALL places here are dangerous like that. That's where I think people are overreating (let's face it: we, brazilians, are drama queens when it comes to our country... we like to criticize everything, even the parts that are good).

Basically every place aside of the South states are dangerous places, I live in a "cidade do interior" from SP, which are considered more calm, and shit is real around here, I don't dare putting up earphones to walk on the street at the middle of the day, and there is a police station pretty close my house (which was once attacked), we had organized crime issuing "toques de recolher" several times here and I had to take the buss almost midnight, during it, to get back from the university, and walk a kilometer home wishing nothing happened to me, my house was attempted for invasion at least a dozen times, the time I mentioned on a post above, in 2012, was right after they invaded a small marketplace near here, some of my neighbours had their house invaded, my grandma that lives two quarters from here had her house invaded but was gladly not there at the time, one of my friends was also held at gun point, tied, on his house right near here, twice, an armed guy robbed me and my friend while we were playing with kites when we were kids, a gun robbery for a fucking kite, we also had two guys steal another friend bicycle at the same spot two years before, I saw another friend being chased by an armed guy right in front of here as well, the guy passed right through me with the gun (gladly my friend escaped), then last year we had the shoutout right in front of my workplace that looked like a warzone...

And on Northeast and Rio there is way, way, way more shit happening, now even on ES just because the police wants a raise, shit is real there, like it was on Bahia/Pernambuco, some of this past years as well.

The South states are basically the only non-dangerous places around here, sure, not every city is a criminal chaos, but it's pretty damn dangerous all over this country, and we have insane death counts backing it up, so it's not really much of an exaggerarion.

Actually, Rio Grande do Sul is dangerous too. The only safe cities here are the very small ones (less than five thousand citizens), but even they are changing. Maybe you mean Santa Catarina and Paraná, which looks a little better. But not that much.

I'm quite curious about where LipeJJ lives in Rio to say that the concern with security in Brazil is drama. I don't quite remember knowing anyone (I live in São Leopoldo, but lived in two cities in São Paulo and have friends in Rio de Janeiro and family in Santa Catarina) that wasn't or doesn't have anyone near them that wasn't robbed or even killed by criminals. I was robbed twice here in Rio Grande do Sul (once in my city and one time in Porto Alegre), my mom had her car stolen with a gun pointed to his head, my father had his car stolen with a gun pointed to his head twice, the father of a friend of mine in Rio was killed. And she doesn't live in a dangerous area. Neither do I or my parents. I'm from middle class and most of my friends and family are from middle or higher class, living in good neighbourhood.
