Actually, what I miss the most from the old games is local co-op. And that goes along very well with cartoony games. It's hard to find a game like this in XOne that it's not indie (honestly, it's so hard to find an indie game that I really appreciate, like Limbo).
OP: I really don't know if I want more retro style games. You know, you can play the old games anytime in various ways and launch a game in 2017 with the same style (artwise and gameplaywise) doesn't have the same impact. I think retro style/cartoony games are niche and that's exactly what they should be. Yooka-Laylee and Cuphead are in the top in the list of games I will purchase this year, but that occurs just because it's not common to find new games like that. Nintendo will always have a good number of retro style games and even Sony seems to care about that market (Knack, Ratchet and Clank, Crash remake), so I think we have the right amount of this kind of games.
If you're talking about cartoony games as opposite of realistic looking games, then I have to agree with you. Plants vs Zomies GW2, Zelda WW HD and Gravity Rush 2, for example, look beautiful. I really enjoy that kind of graphics.
