Nintendo have stated they were not happy with external hard drive solutions because they are not practical for portable mode. They wanted their external solutions to be usable in both docked and portable mode so I doubt there will be external hard drives (at least for the first year or two) unless there seems to be extreme outrage and/or demand.
On topic no. I do have an SD card for just in case there are games that I feel I must have that I can only buy digital (normally Gamestop exclusives since I do not shop at Gamestop) but since I buy all physical (collector) I doubt I will need more than what the console provides.
