Of course you can do more damage to Mexico is you enter a trade war. That being a smart choice is what is questionable, and I'm not even taking about good/bad or moral choices. If Trump wants USA to do better, having Mexico as a good trading partner is better than to make a trade war with them.

 

And you can call Mexico a third world country all you want, but fact is that they are one of the most important trading partners you have and so, they are  more than relevant to your economy

 

The calculation here is that I doubt Mexico would want to engage in such a war. Especialy not with a leader that is at a historically low approval rating and doesn't need an economic crash on top of everything else. I believe we can make them bow and buckle and they'll fall in line with adequate pressure.
