It works both ways. If a $300 PC will be equal to a $2000 pc like you say in future then chances are you can buy a console for an even cheaper price and just as powerful.
It will come in the box and ready to play straight away. No hassle. Just very convenient..
Personally I don't think pc or consoles are going anywhere for a while.
