the problem stems from the fact that us "gamers" are more specific than regular people. if people want an FPS game, they look for whatever sits on the surface, being CoD, because hey everyone plays it so its the best one right? if people buy a new phone, they go for the newest model because hey its new that means its the best one right?

yeah, it may sound like ignorance, but its just a normal human behavior. im not exactly a huge sports fan, but if anybody ever asked me what my favorite american football team is i would say the patriots, simply because its my dad's favorite team and i guess they win a lot. if people arent invested in something they dont usually take the time to learn more about it. people dont look for better alternatives to CoD because they dont care enough to do so. people dont want to believe the newest iphone is bad because that would require understanding tech stuff, which they are too stubborn to understand. its easy for us to know because we spend so much time with it.

in a word- its ignorance. making a rash decision while ignoring evidence and facts. its not a good thing, but people will only change if they want to change.
