As I Brazilian, I can tell you how the route of taxing imported products to stimulate national production will go. Things will become expensive as hell. The cost of labor in the US is high, the minimum wage is to high. These taxes will only generate effects if they are high enough to make imported stuff more expensive than internal production.

Most cars is Brazil are produced nationally. Our popular cars are total crap and ridiculously overpriced. So, OK, you're saving the jobs of a few thousand workers, but millions of people can't buy decent cars due to high costs.

My only issue so far with him is the protectionism. Honestly, it isn't bad for my country (actually, it's good for everyone), since we can benefit if other countries become less interested in doing business with the US. But China may use the opportunity to finally steal the position of leading economy in the world.
