I went back and checked the dates. It's a combination of Sony releasing at more spaced out intervals, Xbox doing the same but with a smaller sample size, and Nintendo releasing more rapidly than the others for the last couple of generations. PS1 - Sept 1995 (North America) - came out Dec 1994 in Japan XBox - Nov 2001 (NA) NES - October 1985 (NA) Nintendo generally releases consoles more often, and it's getting to the point now where the generations don't align. While the 360 was released fast, Microsoft any Sony re-aligned with the XBox One/PS5. You can call it Nintendo releasing faster or Sony releasing over a longer time frame - it's the same effect. If Nintendo releases the next console post-Switch 5 years later in 2012, that will only be 2-3 years after the next Playstation Console. This only re-aligns if the Switch is an enormous success and Nintendo waits 8 years before releasing another system. |
The problem with the Switch in the timeline is that it is not only a successor to the Wii U, but also the 3DS. That would make its launch 6 years after the 3DS debuted. So, nothing really different from the 5-6 years. I expect Sony to go back to a 6 year schedule this gen, releasing the PS5 in 2019. Even if Nintendo continues to release 2 years before Sony does, it doesn't really change them being in the same gen.
