People on forums put too much weight on exclusives imo. While they are very important, the vast majority of those who buy consoles don't look for exclusive games but for specific games and those games usually are third party like Call of Duty, Fifa, GTA, Assassin's Creed etc. Most don't care/know about the exclusives.

The advantage to have exclusives is that on top of having the mainstream, you also have the hardcore gamers. There is a reason why exclusives don't sell as much as multiplats and it's because they are mostly unknown IPs to the masses. People are not going to fork 60$ on an unknown product.

You can build a large fanbase around your exclusives though. Sony had a lot of success with games like Gran Turismo, Uncharted and God of War. Just like Microsoft had a lot of success with Gears, Halo and Forza. As long as the console gets the blockbuster third parties people will buy these consoles without knowing about the exclusives at first.

There are also other incentives to choose one over the other like brand recognition, power under the hood, good/bad press or simply getting the one your friends have. All of these are more important than exclusives because word of mouth is key in selling consoles as hardcore gamers will either praise or downplay your console for free and I still believe that's basically what happened this gen. Exclusives had little impact imo.

I feel the same way. You said it better than I could have.
