VAT. It varies quite a bit across Europe. IIRC the same is true with tax in the US but I think you guys are used to prices before tax. Us Europeans would be pissed/confused if Nintendo gave a pre-tax price and then when we went to the store and see it's a fair chunk higher than that.

Yeah, tax in the US can vary between states, counties, and cities, so you can have different tax rates all within normal driving distance.  It would be impossible to advertise except on the local level and then it would be a pain.  That being said, the amounts themselves usually differ very little so it's not a big deal.
