Because it's sharing the lime light with the Switch. When 3DS was about to launch, we heard nothing about DS games. When DS was about to launch we heard nothing about new GBA games, it's just different this time around. And it's only a sign that handheld tech is slowly catching up with its console counterparts.
Also, 61 million users is a lot to lose so quick. Minds well get what you can out of them with your software right? Reggie and Kimishima said the 3DS would live alongside Switch, how long that continues, only time will tell. I'd imagine after 2017 they'll renege on that statement.
