It really needs to be cleared up asap I mean what does having access to online without the app actually allow. Without lobbies and matchmaking how would one be able to play Splatoon 2 for example. I'm hopeing this is purely an option for those taking the handheld part on the road and everythign else works as normal though a router when you rin the house. Nintendo really need to step up and clear up something so important like this.

Aren't lobbies and matchmaking part of the game, in Splatoon?

I don't see why that wouldn't be the case for Splatoon2.

From what I get from their messaging, so far, is that you get to organise game session from your phone, even if you're not using the Switch. You get to get invites from your online friends, letting you know they want to play with you. And stuff like that. And matchmaking will be tied to the regular online subscription. They really need to give an in-depth explanation of how their entire online services will work.

Yea that is kinda the feeling I get that's it's an an app such as the PlayStation app or Windows 10 Xbox app that allows you to message friends check out there screenshots browse the onlien shop/buy games digitally etc whislt not on the consoles themselves.

Problem is more so it just hasn't been comunicated very well and nothing mentioned about their online service in general.
