I always thought this was just an option. Or an added feature or something. But unless its some sort of massive mistake, Reggie just confirmed it as an "elegant solution" to aproblem that doesn't even exist.

The smart phone app that we’re creating, that will be part of our online service, we believe is going to be a very compelling part of the overall proposition because that’s how you’ll voice chat, that’s how you’ll do your matchmaking, and create your lobby. We also think it’s a very elegant solution because if you’ve taken your switch on the go, you’ve put yourself in a hotspot, you’re looking at get a quick match of Mario Kart in, to whip out some sort of bulky, gamer headset is a bit of a challenge.

So we think we’ve got an elegant solution. That’s a very specific answer to your question.

How is this even possible? Why???? So to game online on the switch you will need to have a smartphone? And this is an elegant solution? And don't forget, this online service i also a paid service.

I don't know, this coupled with the news that at launch the switch won't do netflix or youtube or have a browser.... the only thing i can think of is that they are doing this to keep the OS footprint as low as possible. so more of its available ram is left for games. And i honestly think that is a stretch.

This is 2017 for crying out loud.

We had this conversation. It's fucking stupid.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.
