Party is not only composed of what you see, but those who stay behind carrying all those items for them. Not to mention before FF X-2 there wasn't any Final Fantasy game that didn't interwine, at least, male and female characters in your party throughout the story save for the original Final Fantasy.

Yeah, pretty dark times before they realized what people really want with FFX-2.
