As a former Nintendo fan who switched to Playstation, this one is easy.  Playstation hasn't lost as many fans because they haven't done as many things that would make them lose fans.

They did lose fans to Microsoft but recovered quickly.  Likewise, Microsoft lost a bunch of fans at the start of this generation but they also recovered quite well.  Nintendo, on the other hand, never recovered from losing third-parties, which is a really big deal, so the fans who left never came back.

Playstation and Xbox both have their groups of die-hard fans, just like Nintendo, but they ALSO have tons of fans who love third-party software just as much or even more.  That's the real difference.

It's no great mystery.  Most consumers will jump ship if they feel like the competition offers a better product.  If Nintendo hasn't been able to make people jump back then they have no one blame but themselves.  That's how business works.

You bought a Vita, but not a 3DS. I think that sums it up.

Well, no, it doesn't sum up anything.  It's just a deflection.

Maybe it would sum things up if the question was, "which handheld had Persona 4 Golden?"
