Another factor that probably wasn't as bad back in 2012 is scalpers ordering only on the basis of reselling on at a profit or simply returning if no potential profit.
I do remember there was a big issue with overstock on wii u and maybe that too was caused by pre-orders being cancelled.
It will be interesting to see how this all works out in the end but that probably won't be until May until we start getting the full picture. I've already seen quite a few comments about people pre-ordering the Switch but its looking like they will cancel before shipment but again this is from a UK perspective.
