Curious on Joy-con charging. Does it charge if you remove the switch from teh dock? Or do they only charge when docked?

How much of the battery life is affected if it does charge the joycons when connected then? I mean imagine playing Zelda on teh Switch with joycons that were dead before hookng up. Not only is the game draining the batttery, but now the controllers are draining the system as well.

I'm guessing they don't charge unless docked.
